Nairobi bids to host 2029 World Athletics Championships

Nairobi has formally bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, aiming to become the first African city to stage the prestigious event. The Kenyan capital is competing against bids from London, Rome, and Munich.

The Kenyan government has pledged its complete support for the bid, promising the necessary infrastructure, security, and organizational backing to successfully host the championships. This commitment underscores Kenya's dedication to showcasing its capability in organizing major international sporting events.

Kenya boasts a strong track record in hosting athletics competitions. The country previously hosted the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, the 2017 World U18 Championships in Nairobi, and the 2021 World U20 Championships, also in Nairobi. Additionally, Nairobi hosted the African Athletics Championships in 2010.

World Athletics is expected to announce the host city for the 2029 championships in September. Nairobi's bid represents a significant opportunity for the continent to host a premier global sporting spectacle.
