Authorities are investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, who is believed to have died shortly after her abduction in late January. Investigators cited a note sent to the media as evidence, which reportedly followed an initial ransom letter demanding millions of dollars in Bitcoin.

The second note, sent in February, allegedly explained that Nancy Guthrie had died soon after her abduction, though the kidnappers' intent remains unclear. This information was reportedly known only to CNN and a local news station in Tucson, Arizona, where Guthrie lived.

Guthrie was reported missing in January after being dropped off by relatives and subsequently missing an online church service. The initial ransom letter was sent to her daughter, Savannah Guthrie. The family released a statement on February 7, acknowledging receipt of the message from the abductors.

Law enforcement had asked media outlets to withhold details of the notes during the investigation. While Guthrie's remains have not been recovered, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department stated that the investigation remains active and ongoing, with close collaboration between local authorities and the FBI.
