Nantes: Woman Gives Birth in the Street and Is Escorted by Police to Hospital

A 26-year-old woman gave birth in a firefighters’ ambulance after labor began unexpectedly in a Nantes street on Saturday afternoon.

The woman had gone out alone from her home in the Bottière neighborhood while labor was starting. Shortly before 4 p.m., emergency services responded on Rue Felix Ménétrier, where five firefighters came to her aid.

“She gave birth in the firefighters’ ambulance,” the Loire-Atlantique departmental fire and rescue service told Le Figaro. The mother and baby were taken urgently to Nantes University Hospital, with the National Police escorting the ambulance and the rest of the convoy.

The newborn’s life was considered at risk when emergency services intervened. The article also recalls a separate case this summer in Seine-Saint-Denis, where a woman gave birth to her sixth child in the street while preparing to go to a maternity hospital.
