Nasarawa Labour Party chairman alleges life threats, seeks protection

Alexander Ombugu, a factional chairman of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, has publicly appealed for protection from security agencies, alleging that his life is under threat. Ombugu stated in Lafia, the state capital, that he suspects the threats are connected to his position on internal disputes that emerged during the party's recently concluded primary elections.

The whole issue is because I am standing by the truth, and some people within and outside the party are not happy about it.

While declining to name specific individuals he suspects, Ombugu emphasized that such information would be shared directly with security agencies to ensure the integrity of any investigation. He expressed his distress, recounting how his wife had become upset after hearing rumors about him being attacked.

Today, my wife returned from where she went to buy something and was crying profusely. When I asked what had happened, she informed me that rumours that I will soon be attacked have already been spread everywhere.

Ombugu reiterated his commitment to upholding the truth and adhering to the laws governing the Labour Party and Nigeria. He stressed that he has not wronged anyone in his political career and is seeking security coverage and a thorough investigation to safeguard his life.

I have not done anything wrong to anyone since I joined active politics. In carrying out my duties, I have always followed the laws guarding the Labour Party and our dear country, Nigeria.

Previously, Ombugu had called for stakeholders to resolve internal party disputes and extended a hand of fellowship to all factions. He highlighted his role as the state chairman, recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission, and his responsibility to unite party members ahead of the 2027 general elections. He expressed readiness to engage in discussions to resolve outstanding issues.

I am appealing to the security agencies for adequate security coverage, and that a proper investigation into this matter should be carried out so that my life can be protected.
