National Guard Deployed as West Virginia Reels from Devastating Flash Floods

West Virginia is grappling with severe flash flooding after torrential rains inundated homes and businesses, washed out bridges, and prompted numerous water rescues. Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a state of emergency for all 55 counties and deployed 500 National Guard members to the hardest-hit areas in the northern part of the state.

Forecasters reported that some areas received up to 7 inches of rain, with certain locations experiencing 4.5 inches in just 37 minutes. This intense rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to widespread flooding. Officials fear that some residents may be missing, as search operations continue. Nineteen National Guard and state police helicopters are actively involved in rescue missions or are on standby.

As of Wednesday, three emergency shelters were opened, providing refuge for over 100 residents displaced by the floods. Governor Morrisey acknowledged concerns about potential fatalities, stating that officials would release more information as it becomes available. He urged West Virginians to come together to support those affected and assist in the rebuilding efforts.

Social media footage depicted submerged vehicles in parking lots, including a Walmart in Weston where floodwaters surged inside the store. Nearby, a hotel's ground floor was inundated. Videos also captured dramatic rescues, such as a man and his son evacuating their home moments before their shed floated away. Emergency crews reported dozens of rescues from flooded vehicles, though access to some areas remained cut off by the rising waters.
