NATO chief calls U.S. attacks on Iran 'absolutely necessary'

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declared U.S. airstrikes against Iran "absolutely necessary" amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at a NATO summit in Ankara, Stoltenberg stated that Iran's alleged violation of a ceasefire, including attacks on ships, necessitated a strong U.S. response.

The recent U.S. military action targeted 80 Iranian sites, including 60 vessels belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. U.S. Central Command, Centcom, confirmed the strikes were retaliation for Iranian assaults on commercial shipping. Conversely, Iran's Revolutionary Guard reportedly attacked 85 sites linked to the U.S. military in Bahrain and Kuwait.

This exchange marks a significant escalation since February 28, when the U.S. and Israel conducted joint attacks on Iran. A fragile understanding was reached in mid-June, obligating both nations to negotiate a final peace agreement within 60 days and cease mutual attacks. However, both countries have since accused each other of breaching this agreement, leading to the current volatile situation.
