Navy restores power to A’Ibom community after 15 years

The Nigerian Navy has successfully restored electricity to the Nduk community in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, ending a 15-year period of darkness. The intervention included the rehabilitation of the community's electrification project and the installation of a new 300KVA transformer, bringing power back to residents.

It is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I stand before you today to witness the commissioning of this project for this community after a period of 15 years.

The project was commissioned as part of the Nigerian Navy's Civil-Military Cooperation programs, approved by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas. Speaking at the commissioning, Abbas, represented by Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie, stated that empowering communities is vital for national security and prosperity. He highlighted the Navy's commitment to supporting communities beyond its traditional maritime security roles.

"This understanding has continued to guide the Nigerian Navy Civil-Military Cooperation efforts and the CNS Special Intervention Quick Impact Scheme, which seeks to address critical community needs while fostering stronger bonds between the Armed Forces and the communities they serve," Abbas said. He described the electrification project as timely and impactful, urging residents to protect the new facilities from vandalism to ensure their longevity.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, represented by the Commissioner of Power, Hon Iniobong Robson, commended the Navy's intervention. He noted that the project aligns with his administration's ARISE agenda, which focuses on socioeconomic development, peaceful coexistence, and the security of rural communities. The project facilitator, Rear Admiral Anifiok Uko, also thanked the Chief of Naval Staff for identifying and addressing the community's development needs.
