Nayarit Politics Heats Up as Senator and Mayor Seek Key Coalition Role

Senator Jazmín Bugarín has stepped down from her position within the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) to pursue a key political role. Bugarín, 39, submitted her resignation effective Wednesday, aiming to become the coordinator of the Committee for the Defense of the 4T in Nayarit, a significant internal candidacy within the Morena-PVEM-PT coalition.

Bugarín, who previously served as a local deputy and federal deputy twice, stated that this move signifies a "new stage of service" and a "new chapter" where she will dedicate her "effort, experience, and heart to the causes of our people." The PVEM national leadership has publicly backed her bid, praising her "results-oriented" approach, "social sensitivity," and "constant work." They highlighted her "closeness to the people" and "management capacity" as factors consolidating her as a "highly competitive profile" for the governorship of Nayarit in 2027.

Adding to the political maneuvering, Geraldine Ponce, the current mayor of Tepic, announced on Tuesday that she will also request a leave of absence. Starting June 20, Ponce plans to step away from her mayoral duties to register and compete for the same position: coordinator of the Committee for the Defense of the Transformation in Nayarit. Both Bugarín and Ponce are positioning themselves for potential future gubernatorial races, signaling a dynamic political landscape in the state.
