NBA News: Klay Thompson joins Miami Heat, aims for championship with Giannis

NBA player Klay Thompson has officially joined the Miami Heat, signaling his ambition to secure another championship title. Introduced as the newest member of the team, Thompson expressed his eagerness to play alongside Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and contribute to the Heat's quest for glory.

Thompson, a four-time champion with the Golden State Warriors, joins the Heat after his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks. He stated his motivation stems from Giannis Antetokounmpo's winning experience. "When you feel it for the first time, you do everything you can to get back," Thompson said at the Kaseya Center, the Heat's home arena. "I feel I have a lot to prove, and I feel I can do it on a winning team."

The upcoming 2026-2027 season is particularly significant for the 36-year-old Thompson, who has played thirteen seasons in the NBA, eleven of them with the Warriors. He views this season as an opportunity for "redemption" and to demonstrate that he can still perform at an elite level. "I am very excited," he added.

The Miami Heat, with Antetokounmpo as their centerpiece, aims to recapture the success of their past championship era. Coach Erik Spoelstra emphasized the team's focus on forging its own identity. "We are going to let this (new) team write its own story," Spoelstra commented. "In five weeks, we start training and begin building a story that hopefully ends spectacularly."

Thompson's move to Miami also carries personal significance, linked to his father's upbringing in the city and its proximity to the Bahamas, the homeland of his paternal grandparents. "Being so close to the Bahamas is very special; I can play in front of my cousins and my aunts. I feel like I'm in my second home, and that really motivates me," said Thompson, who holds the NBA record for most three-pointers in a single game with 14. He is also nearing the 3,000 three-point milestone, a mark achieved only by Stephen Curry and James Harden.
