NDC aspirants warn against senatorial candidate imposition in Enugu

Aspirants and stakeholders within the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) from Nsukka Zone have issued a stern warning against the imposition of a senatorial candidate for the Enugu North Senatorial District. They are demanding that internal democracy, transparency, and fairness guide the selection process for candidates vying for the three House of Representatives seats in the zone.

The stakeholders emphasized that any form of political imposition would be resisted by the people of Nsukka. They highlighted the zone's political significance, accounting for approximately 56 percent of Enugu state's voting population, and warned that ignoring the sentiments of the grassroots could result in grave electoral consequences for the NDC. The group also cautioned that such actions might force many aspirants to withdraw their support and participation from the party.

Referencing the 2023 general elections, the aspirants pointed to the Labour Party's strong performance in Nsukka Zone, which contributed to defeating a sitting governor. This, they argued, demonstrates the political independence of Nsukka voters and their historical resistance to imposed candidates. Despite their concerns, the aspirants reaffirmed their loyalty to the NDC and expressed confidence in former Enugu State Governor Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo's leadership, provided democratic principles are upheld.

The aspirants also dismissed the influence of money politics in the zone, insisting that electoral victories in Nsukka are determined by grassroots acceptance, credibility, integrity and competence rather than political spending or elite endorsement.
