NDLEA seized 14.8m kg of illicit drugs, arrested 77,859 in five years - Marwa

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has made substantial seizures of illicit drugs and apprehended a large number of suspects over the past five years, according to agency Chairman Buba Marwa. Speaking at an event in Dutse, Jigawa State, Marwa disclosed that the agency arrested 77,859 individuals and seized more than 14.8 million kilograms of illegal substances between January 2021 and December 2025.

I stand before this distinguished audience gathered here today not merely to inaugurate a committee, but to fortify a frontline in the battle for the soul of our youths and the stability of our nation.

Marwa emphasized the critical link between drug abuse and the nation's escalating insecurity and economic challenges. "Drug abuse is the silent pandemic fueling the insecurity and economic sabotage we face today. It erodes the productivity of our greatest asset, our youth," he stated, highlighting the detrimental impact on the country's young population.

The NDLEA has transitioned from reactive measures to proactive, offensive operations, yielding significant results. Within the specified period, the agency secured 14,122 convictions, demonstrating a move towards ending impunity in drug-related offenses. Marwa noted that 240 high-profile drug barons were among those arrested.

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA is also focused on rehabilitation. Over 50,000 individuals have received counseling and treatment across 31 centers nationwide, aiding their transition from dependence to productive lives. Marwa praised the Jigawa State Government for its proactive stance against drug abuse and insecurity, calling its initiative a "Jigawa Model of Excellence" that other states should emulate.

Between January 2021 and December 2025, our balanced approach has yielded unprecedented results with 77,859 arrests, including 240 high-profile drug barons who thought they were untouchable. Over 14.8 million kilograms of illicit substances were intercepted while 14,122 convictions were secured within the period, proving that the era of impunity is over.

He specifically commended the appointment of retired Commodore CN Ibrahim Braji as the Coordinator of the state's task force, describing it as a "masterstroke" due to Braji's extensive experience as a former NDLEA State Commander. Marwa urged the new coordinator to provide transformative leadership in the fight against drugs within the state.
