Nea Makri: Trial Delayed in Case Involving Elderly Woman’s Bones

The trial of a 68-year-old woman and her son was postponed until Monday after investigators found the bones of her elderly mother in a storage area at the family home in Nea Makri.

The pair face charges of jointly concealing a body. The remains were found Friday morning in a basement storage space at the house on Ithakis Street, following a complaint from the elderly woman’s granddaughter. She reportedly said she had not been in contact with her grandmother for a decade.

The 68-year-old defendant allegedly admitted that she buried her mother’s body so she could continue collecting the woman’s pension. Her son, the elderly woman’s grandson, denies any involvement. Both defendants remain in custody.

The investigation is continuing. A specialist anthropologist has been assigned to examine the bones and determine the woman’s age, which could help establish when she died. Authorities are also pursuing a fraud case against the two detainees. The charge could be treated as a felony if the total alleged fraud exceeds 120,000 euros.
