NEA to provide daily haze advisories after first unhealthy 24-hour PSI reading from haze since 2023

Singapore’s central region recorded its first unhealthy 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index reading linked to haze since October 2023, prompting the National Environment Agency to begin daily advisories.

The PSI crossed into the unhealthy range, between 101 and 200, at 7 a.m. on Friday and rose to 105 at 10 a.m. The NEA said the advisories would include a 24-hour PSI forecast so people could plan activities and events.

The agency said the health effects depend on a person’s health, the PSI level and the duration and intensity of outdoor activity. It advised residents to reduce outdoor activity and physical exertion, drink plenty of water, and ensure that people with chronic heart and lung conditions have their medication available.

The NEA also urged elderly people, pregnant women, children and those with chronic heart and lung conditions to seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms or feel unwell.

The health impact of the haze is dependent on each individual’s health status, the PSI level, and the duration and intensity of outdoor activity. Reducing outdoor activities and physical exertion can help limit the ill effects from haze exposure.
