Nearly 160 Migrants Rescued After Boat Catches Fire During Channel Crossing

A joint French and British rescue operation saved 157 migrants after their small boat caught fire while attempting to cross the English Channel on Tuesday. This incident marks one of the largest such rescue operations recorded since data collection began in 2018.

The fire broke out on a vessel situated on the border between French and British waters early Tuesday morning. The emergency forced the occupants to abandon the boat and jump into the water. French maritime authorities in the Pas-de-Calais region confirmed that no casualties were reported from the incident. The migrants had departed from the coastal village of Veules-les-Roses in Normandy on Monday.

British coastguard officials confirmed that UK vessels and a lifeboat were dispatched to assist after the boat caught fire within the French search and rescue zone. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) charity also reported launching a lifeboat at 6:00 am to respond to the incident.

Recent observations indicate an increase in the size of dinghies used for these crossings, with some reported to be 12 meters long, larger than the usual 8 to 10 meters. French maritime authorities also noted a rise in the average number of people per boat, increasing from 26 in 2021 to 65 this year. Despite the dangers, France remains a common departure point for migrants seeking to reach Britain, often paying smugglers thousands of dollars for the perilous journey across the busy shipping route. Last year, over 41,000 migrants arrived on England's southern coast, and tragically, 14 people have died attempting the crossing so far this year, with at least 29 deaths recorded in the previous year.
