Nearly 3,000 heat-related deaths during summer heatwaves, UKHSA estimates

The United Kingdom experienced an estimated 2,877 heat-related deaths during the intense heatwaves of May and June, a figure nearly double that of the previous year and the second-highest on record, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The preliminary assessment indicated that 753 deaths were linked to the heatwave from May 24-27, with an additional 2,124 deaths associated with the June 21-28 heatwave. Both periods saw record-breaking temperatures, with highs of 31.5C (88.7F) on May 26 and 38.0C on June 26.

Dr. Ross Thompson of the UKHSA highlighted the significant danger posed by extreme heat, particularly to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions. He cautioned that as the climate warms, heatwaves are expected to become longer, more frequent, and more severe, emphasizing the critical need for the country to prepare for higher temperatures.

The summer's heat has also impacted water supplies, with drought declared across more than half of England due to hot, dry weather depleting reservoirs. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper acknowledged the "serious impact" on public health and the National Health Service (NHS), expressing condolences to bereaved families and gratitude to healthcare workers.
