Nearly 40°C in France in the Coming Days: What About Belgium? “Some Models Suggest Another Heat Surge”

Belgium could get a pleasant start to September without experiencing the intense heat forecast farther south. After scattered rain through the week, warmer and more stable weather is expected to arrive for the weekend.

Tuesday should bring a calmer, drier day after heavy showers in parts of Belgium. Meteorologist Pascal Mormal of the Royal Meteorological Institute said Wednesday through Friday would remain mixed, with occasional light rain and periods of sunshine.

It will still be more pleasant, more stable and drier. Unfortunately, we will probably return to somewhat rainier conditions for the rest of the week.

Rainfall totals are expected to remain limited, generally between 5 and 10 liters per square meter through Saturday. The showers should continue easing the effects of drought. Mormal said August began very dry, but wetter conditions in the second half of the month partly reduced the deficit.

We are heading toward a small burst of heat around the weekend.

A clearer improvement is expected from Saturday, as high-pressure conditions bring more sunshine and warmth. Sunday could be the best day of the weekend, with temperatures between 25°C and 27°C. Warm air will be much stronger in central and southern France, where temperatures could rise above 35°C and possibly reach 40°C.

Belgium may retain mild summer weather into Monday, but Mormal said temperatures around 30°C at the beginning of September would not be exceptional and did not amount to a heatwave. A more oceanic airflow could lower temperatures and bring some rain from Tuesday. No sharp cooling is expected during the first half of September, and some weather models even indicate another warm spell around Sept. 15, although that trend still needs confirmation.
