NEMA reaffirms commitment to transparency, equity

Zubaida Umar, the Director General of Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has reiterated the agency's dedication to upholding the Federal Character principle. This principle emphasizes fairness and equity in the distribution of public offices and resources across the nation's diverse regions.

Umar conveyed this commitment during an interactive session at the Federal Character Commission (FCC) headquarters in Abuja. She met with the FCC Chairman, Hulayat Omidiran, and other commissioners. The engagement was part of the FCC's regular consultations with heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to familiarize them with the commission's operational procedures, guidelines, and expectations.

She affirmed NEMA’s commitment to adhering to the Federal Character principle, assuring that the Agency would continue to ensure transparency, fairness and due process in its management processes and other activities.

According to a statement released by NEMA, Umar assured the FCC that the agency would continue to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to due process in all its management processes and activities. This commitment aligns with relevant government regulations and guidelines governing public administration.

The engagement was part of the Commission’s routine interface with Chief Executives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to acquaint them with the procedures, guidelines and expectations of the Commission.

During the session, FCC Chairman Omidiran explained the purpose of the routine interface, which is to ensure MDAs understand and comply with the commission's mandates. An FCC Honourable Commissioner, Mr. Pam Botmang, commended Umar for her transparent leadership and encouraged ongoing dialogue to foster sustainable collaboration between NEMA and the FCC, reinforcing the adherence to Federal Character principles.

The interactive session was deemed fruitful, enhancing mutual understanding of the respective roles and expectations of both NEMA and the Federal Character Commission. The FCC is constitutionally empowered to promote equity in the allocation of public positions.
