Nepal: 3,296 disaster incidents claim 160 lives in three months

Nepal experienced a significant number of natural disasters in the final quarter of its last fiscal year, with 3,296 incidents reported between April 14 and July 16. These events claimed the lives of 160 people, left two missing, and injured 945 others, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

Fire incidents were the most prevalent, with 897 occurrences leading to 17 deaths, 109 injuries, and affecting 990 families. Snakebites followed closely, with 514 incidents resulting in 38 fatalities, 479 injuries, and impacting 517 families.

Storms also caused considerable damage, with 477 incidents leading to 13 deaths, 68 injuries, and affecting 1,356 families. The country also faced 433 landslide incidents, which caused 12 deaths and 15 injuries, while 223 lightning strikes resulted in 24 deaths and 120 injuries.

Further contributing to the toll were 181 wildlife attacks, claiming 17 lives and injuring 103 people. Floods and heavy rainfall incidents also occurred, with 161 floods causing nine deaths and 396 families affected, and 153 heavy rainfall events resulting in four deaths. Other incidents included high-altitude sickness, falling stones, wildfires, and avalanches, adding to the overall impact of natural calamities.
