Nepal and China race to respond to catastrophic flash floods that killed more than 500 people

Rescue efforts are intensifying in Nepal and China following catastrophic flash floods that have claimed over 500 lives and left more than 1,500 people missing. Survivors, covered in mud, are being pulled to safety, while helicopters airlift stranded individuals as the two nations grapple with the disaster's immense scale.

Nepal's disaster management authority reported a death toll of 547, with an additional 977 individuals still unaccounted for. Among the missing are numerous foreigners who were in the region for work, trekking, or religious pilgrimages. The scale of the rescue operation is immense, with hundreds of rescuers working tirelessly to reach affected areas, some of which are difficult to access.

Adding to the crisis, authorities have issued fresh alerts regarding a potential dam burst on the Tibetan side, raising fears of further flooding. A barrier lake, formed high in the Chinese Himalayas after the initial floods, is already overflowing, prompting warnings for people in downstream areas to move to safer ground. This poses a significant risk to communities and rescue operations.

Rescue workers faced temporary halts in their efforts due to concerns over the overflowing lake, with some personnel being airlifted into the disaster zone via drones. The focus remains on finding survivors, including dozens potentially trapped in a hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa, Nepal. The challenging terrain and ongoing risks underscore the complexity and urgency of the relief efforts.
