Nepal and China Resume Flood Rescue Amidst New Lake Danger

Rescue operations have resumed in the flood-ravaged Nepal-Tibet border region after a brief pause, but a new threat looms: a newly formed glacial lake. The disaster originated when a portion of a glacier collapsed at high altitude, triggering a massive landslide. This event dammed the Lende River, creating a lake whose water levels began to rise rapidly. The unstable barrier holding back this new lake, composed of loose debris, has prompted experts to warn of potential further flooding. Alton Byers, a glacial-hazards scientist, described the barrier as highly unstable, noting that a natural, gradual drainage would be the safest outcome. Chinese crews are reportedly considering manual methods to lower the lake's level. The death toll in Nepal has reached at least 579, with 1,924 missing, while Tibet has reported five deaths and 558 missing. International aid from countries including India, the US, and South Korea has arrived, as rescuers face challenges reaching cut-off areas due to mud and washed-out roads.
