Nepal braces for heavy monsoon rains, flash flood risks rise

Nepal faces a heightened risk of heavy rainfall and potential flash floods over the next three days, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The department forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in various parts of the country, particularly in the Lumbini and Karnali provinces.

In view of the forecast, the public has been urged to take precautions against possible risks.

Authorities have issued advisories urging the public, especially those in vulnerable areas, to take necessary precautions. The monsoon activity is expected to intensify, leading to significant rises in water levels in rivers and streams. The Kathmandu Valley and surrounding districts are specifically warned of a high risk of flash floods.

Suggesting increased monsoon-related activities in the coming three days, the Department has urged citizens residing in vulnerable areas to take precautions against potential risks.

Several districts, including Taplejung, Jhapa, and Chitwan, are also at moderate risk of flash floods. The department's spokesperson, Bibhuti Pokharel, noted that most regions experienced moderate rainfall in the past 24 hours, with some areas already recording heavy to very heavy downpours. The forecast indicates continued heavy rainfall in mountainous, hilly, and Terai regions across Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in Lumbini Province.
