Nepal Police moves to establish anti-cyber scam centre amid rising fraud

Nepal Police is initiating the establishment of an 'Anti-Cyber Scam Centre' in response to a sharp increase in cyber fraud. The move comes as incidents of hacking funds from mobile banking, digital wallets, and accounts like eSewa and Khalti through various schemes, phishing, and other fraudulent methods have become more prevalent.

Nepal Police spokesperson DIG Abinarayan Kafle stated that discussions have taken place and work is underway to develop a possible framework for the center. This collaborative effort will involve representatives from all relevant agencies, including Nepal Police, Nepal Rastra Bank (the central bank), the Nepal Bankers’ Association, digital wallet service providers, payment service providers (PSPs), payment system operators (PSOs), the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, and internet service providers.

Discussions have been held on the matter and work is underway to prepare a possible framework for the centre.

These representatives will be designated as authorized contact persons. They will be co-located at the Cyber Bureau. The center will operate using a case management system to effectively coordinate responses to cyber scam cases, aiming to combat the growing threat of online financial crime in Nepal.
