Nepal-Tibet border floods: Death toll rises to 392, over 1,400 missing

A devastating combination of flash floods and landslides has struck the border region between Nepal and China's Tibet, resulting in a tragic death toll of 392 people and leaving at least 1,468 individuals missing. The disaster has impacted both sides of the border, with Nepal reporting 389 fatalities and China confirming three deaths.

Among the missing are at least 517 foreigners, highlighting the international reach of this tragedy. Nationalities reported include 178 Indians, 90 Americans, 55 Ukrainians, over 50 Malaysians, 34 Australians, 33 Britons, 25 Canadians, and numerous others from countries like South Korea, Singapore, Germany, Russia, South Africa, and Japan.

Reconciling the figures has proven challenging due to factors such as dual citizens, the difficulty of matching recovered bodies with missing persons lists, and the chaotic nature of the disaster sites. Nepalese authorities have reported 910 people still unaccounted for on their side, while China has listed 558 missing, including 260 foreigners.

The Nepal Tourism Board has released a breakdown of 667 missing tourists and travelers, including 127 Nepalese citizens. However, the number of local residents missing remains unclear. The discrepancy in numbers between different government agencies and the tourism board underscores the ongoing efforts to establish a precise count of the affected.

International governments are actively involved in confirming the status of their citizens. The US State Department has stated that 90 Americans are missing, though no fatalities have been reported among them. Similarly, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed over 50 Malaysians are unaccounted for, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reported 34 Australians missing.
