Nepal-Tibet flash floods: 2,478 missing, 586 dead

The devastating flash floods and landslides that swept across the Nepal-Tibet border have left more than 2,478 people missing and claimed at least 586 lives, according to updated figures released Saturday.

Nepal's disaster management agency dramatically increased its missing persons count to 1,924 on Friday. China's Xinhua news agency reported early Saturday that 554 people are missing in Tibet, with seven confirmed deaths. The combined toll marks a significant leap from previous estimates.

Foreign nationals are among the missing, with Nepal's disaster agency stating that 517 foreigners were unaccounted for. China's foreign ministry reported nearly 100 Chinese nationals missing in Nepal, while the Nepal Tourism Board indicated 473 foreign tourists remain out of communication. In total, at least 777 foreigners are missing in the region.

Nationalities reported missing include 98 from India, 90 from the United States, 61 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, and 41 from Australia. While some individuals have been rescued, the sheer scale of the disaster and the ongoing chaos make accurate counts challenging, with figures expected to change.
