Nepali Woman Rescued Alive from Buried Home 10 Days After Flood

Rescuers pulled 64-year-old Chandrika Shrestha alive from her home in Nepal 10 days after massive flooding buried it under mud and debris.

Members of Nepal's Armed Police Force cheered as Shrestha emerged from the house in Nuwakot district, covered in mud. Police deputy superintendent Iqbal Hawari said a police team found her while clearing the area. She was airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.

Video released by the Armed Police Force showed only part of the house above ground, with its lower floors completely submerged in thick sludge. Emergency teams have continued searching for survivors since a tsunami-like wall of water and mud swept across the China-Nepal border after a glacial and rock collapse on August 26.

The article also reported the rescue of a Chinese man found alive inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Nepal's Rasuwa district. Nepal's national disaster agency said 1,344 bodies had been recovered and about 5,000 people remained missing. Chinese state media reported 31 deaths and 531 missing people in China, bringing the reported overall toll to 1,375 dead and more than 5,500 missing.
