Nepali woman rescued alive from buried home 10 days after floods

Ten days after a wall of water and mud swept through the China-Nepal border region, rescuers found 64-year-old Chandrika Shrestha alive beneath the wreckage of her home in Nepal’s Nuwakot district.

Members of Nepal’s Armed Police Force cheered as Shrestha, covered in mud, emerged from the buried house. Only part of the building remained visible in video released by the force. The lower floors had disappeared beneath thick sludge and debris.

“A police team found her as they were clearing the area. She has been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment,” police deputy superintendent Iqbal Hawari told AFP.

Emergency teams have continued searching for survivors since the disaster on August 26, when a glacial and rock collapse sent a tsunami-like surge of water and mud through the border area. Earlier, responders rescued a Chinese man found alive inside a tunnel at Nepal’s Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district.

Nepal’s national disaster agency said 1,344 bodies had been recovered and about 5,000 people remained missing. Chinese state media reported 31 deaths and 531 missing, bringing the combined reported toll to 1,375 dead and more than 5,500 missing.
