Neppo Children's Hospital operator shifts from Yonsei to Dankook, 2028 opening unchanged

Construction is underway for the Neppo Children's Hospital in South Korea's Neppo New City, with a target opening in 2028. However, the operating body has shifted from Yonsei University Health System to Dankook University Hospital. Governor Park Soo-hyun announced the change, stating that Dankook University Hospital, a leading tertiary hospital in the region, possesses deep understanding of local medical needs and top-tier expertise. He highlighted their proven capabilities in treating high-risk pregnancies and critically ill newborns through their regional maternal and child health center.

The province initially planned to partner with Yonsei University Health System. However, they decided that collaborating with a regional hospital would be more suitable for the project's progression than partnering with one of Seoul's major medical institutions. Governor Park explained that major Seoul medical foundations find it difficult to operate hospitals in the region south of Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, due to profitability concerns. He acknowledged that renegotiating the hospital construction from scratch might seem easier, but stressed the ongoing medical vacuum in the southwestern part of South Chungcheong Province and the urgent needs of its residents.

Dankook University Hospital has a deep understanding of the regional medical conditions and the highest level of expertise as a representative tertiary hospital in Chungnam.

Despite the change in the operating body, South Chungcheong Province remains committed to the October 2028 opening date. The hospital will be a three-story building with one basement level, covering 6,000 square meters in Hongseong. Site preparation is currently in progress. Once operational, the Neppo Children's Hospital is expected to significantly improve access to pediatric care in the southwestern region, allowing local children to receive specialized treatment within the province instead of traveling to the Seoul metropolitan area. The provincial government also anticipates that the enhanced medical infrastructure will positively impact settlement conditions and potentially attract public institutions from the Seoul area in the future. South Chungcheong Province and Dankook University Hospital are set to sign a memorandum of understanding for the hospital's construction.
