Netanyahu loses Orbán, gains Janša: Veto power remains

Slovenia's new government has effectively blocked a joint European Union statement concerning Israeli construction in the West Bank, demonstrating that the challenge to a unified EU foreign policy persists despite changes in leadership. For years, Hungary's then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was the primary figure associated with obstructing or diluting EU foreign policy decisions, particularly on issues related to Israel. His departure from power in April seemed to signal a potential shift. However, with Janez Janša returning to lead Slovenia a month later, Ljubljana has now stepped into a similar role, preventing a consensus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This move by Slovenia underscores that while the individual blocking EU policy may change, the mechanism for dissent remains potent. The situation illustrates the inherent difficulty in forging a common foreign policy for the 27-member bloc. While agreement requires the consensus of all member states, a single dissenting voice can prevent any joint action or statement, leaving the EU appearing indecisive on critical international issues.
