Neurosurgeon accuses hospital of unfair contract termination after 30 years

A prominent neurosurgeon has publicly accused a hospital in Taichung, Taiwan, of abruptly terminating his father's 30-year medical contract, sparking concern for both the veteran physician and his patients.

Working in the same company for 30 years, working normally the day before, and being told that the contract will be renewed normally, you fulfill your duties to the last moment, and the next day you suddenly find that the company will not renew the contract, and you don't even have time to hand over to customers and say goodbye to colleagues, to deal with work.

Dr. Li Zheng-ying took to Facebook to express his distress, stating that his father, Dr. Li Wei-yu, a neurosurgeon at Li General Hospital in Dajia District, was informed of the non-renewal of his contract on the very last day, with no prior notice. This sudden decision led to the cancellation of his father's scheduled outpatient appointments and surgeries, leaving patients awaiting treatment in uncertainty.

Li Zheng-ying described the situation as deeply disheartening, likening it to being "unemployed" after three decades of dedicated service. He questioned the hospital's handling of the situation, particularly concerning patients who had recently undergone surgery or were scheduled for procedures. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing patient rights and ensuring a smooth transition of care during any changes within the medical institution.

We hope that every patient who has been affected can smoothly complete the follow-up treatment, and we also hope that every change in medical care can put the patient's rights first.

Li General Hospital issued a statement acknowledging that a final consensus on cooperation and employment terms could not be reached with Dr. Li Wei-yu. The hospital mentioned an offer to extend his work by one month, which he reportedly declined. The hospital apologized for any inconvenience caused to patients and their families, assuring that an emergency response mechanism has been activated. They are actively contacting affected patients to arrange for alternative specialists to continue their treatment, ensuring the continuity of medical care and safeguarding patient rights.
