New 5.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Colombia two weeks after devastating 7.4 tremor

Colombia experienced another seismic event on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the country. This tremor occurred just two weeks after a catastrophic 7.4 magnitude earthquake devastated several regions, claiming hundreds of lives and causing extensive damage.

The latest quake registered at 11:45 AM local time, with its epicenter located seven kilometers from Los Santos in the Santander department. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported the event at a depth of 149 kilometers. Citizens across central and western Colombia felt the movement.

As of the latest reports, authorities have not announced any victims or material losses resulting from this new seismic activity. This event is the strongest recorded in Colombia since the August 10 earthquake, which had its epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó. That earlier disaster, one of the most severe natural disasters in the country in recent decades, resulted in 331 deaths, 4,439 injuries, and 240 disappearances, affecting nearly 500 municipalities.

Two weeks on from the major earthquake, some cities have transitioned from rescue to reconstruction phases. In Cali, one of the hardest-hit areas, search operations have concluded, and efforts are now focused on clearing debris and demolishing at-risk structures.
