New bicycle and pedestrian bridge opens in Wijnegem

Residents of Wijnegem, Belgium, can now enjoy a new, comfortable bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Albert Canal, officially opened today. This modern structure replaces a temporary "rattle bridge" that had been a source of much criticism for its discomfort and unsightly appearance.

The new bridge connects the left and right banks of Wijnegem, offering a smoother passage for cyclists and pedestrians. Mayor Tom Tachelet described the bridge as a "gift" to the municipality, facilitating easier movement across the canal. Previously, a single bridge served all traffic, but the new infrastructure separates vehicular traffic onto a road bridge (in use for two years) and provides a dedicated, separate bridge for cyclists and pedestrians.

The construction project spanned four years, during which residents endured some disruption. "There was inconvenience, there was some commotion, but everyone put their teeth into it, and we are proud of the end result," said Mayor Tachelet. He noted that the temporary bridge, while functional, was far from comfortable and earned its nickname "the rattle bridge" due to the noise it generated.

This new bridge is part of a larger initiative to raise all 62 bridges along the Albert Canal. This necessary adjustment allows for increased height to accommodate larger container ships, a move aimed at shifting freight transport from roads to waterways. The mayor anticipates the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge will become a "new hotspot" in Wijnegem, enhancing the area's appeal.
