New Brunswick Approves 500 MW Gas Plant Amid Environmental Concerns

New Brunswick's government has granted conditional approval for a 500-megawatt natural gas plant, a decision that follows an environmental impact assessment. The project, slated for a rural area in the province's southeast, must adhere to 45 specific conditions set by the government. This approval comes despite ongoing criticism from environmental groups and opposition politicians.

Provincial utility NB Power argues the plant is essential to meet a projected sharp increase in power demand by 2028. The company has secured a 25-year contract with Missouri-based ProEnergy to install 10 natural gas turbines. NB Power also stated the facility will act as a crucial backup when weather-dependent renewable energy sources are unavailable. Additionally, Nova Scotia's energy operator has signed a 10-year agreement to purchase 100 megawatts of power from the plant.

The proposed plant has been a point of contention, with critics raising environmental concerns. However, the provincial government's approval is contingent on the company meeting a series of stringent conditions. The plant is scheduled to begin operations by 2028, aiming to bolster the region's energy supply.
