New Calgary neighborhoods Hollins and Halstead break ground; Memorial Drive to be extended

Calgary is expanding eastward with the commencement of construction on two new communities, Hollins and Halstead. Located north and northeast of the East Hills shopping area, the 54-hectare development by Ryco Properties broke ground on Friday.

The project plans to integrate both retail spaces and diverse housing options, including single-family homes and multi-family townhomes. Developers anticipate residents will begin moving into the new neighborhoods by the middle of next year, with the communities designed to house approximately 4,100 people.

A significant infrastructure upgrade is also underway: the extension of Memorial Drive. Currently ending east of 68 Street Northeast, the road will be extended over Stoney Trail to 84 Street Northeast. This four-lane expansion aims to bridge a "critical gap" in Calgary's east-west transportation network, connecting the new communities to the rest of the city.

Roadwork and underground utility installation for the Memorial Drive extension began in early August. The city describes this project as vital for the area's connectivity. The entire infrastructure development, including the Memorial Drive overpass, is estimated to cost $105 million and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
