New Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xiangyan begins diplomatic mission in Panama

Zhang Xiangyan has officially begun his tenure as the new ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Panama, arriving on July 7th to assume his diplomatic functions. His arrival at the airport was marked by a reception from Ángela Álvarez, the acting Director General of Protocol and Ceremonial of the State at Panama's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in Panama.

Upon his arrival, Ambassador Zhang expressed that assuming the role is "a great honor." He conveyed his commitment to working collaboratively with the Panamanian government and representatives from various sectors within the country. His stated objectives include enhancing communication and coordination between China and Panama, deepening the friendship between their peoples, and fostering new advancements in practical cooperation across different fields.

Zhang Xiangyan's appointment marks him as the third ambassador from the People's Republic of China to Panama since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. His mission is expected to build upon the existing relationship and explore avenues for mutual benefit and development.

This diplomatic development occurs amidst ongoing discussions regarding Panama-China relations, including previous reports of U.S. commissioners denouncing alleged Chinese reprisals against Panamanian-flagged vessels and President Mulino's support for his chancellor's stance on speaking with a unified voice regarding China at the OAS.
