New Defensive Maritime Alliance Formed to Boost Cooperation and Safeguard Navigation

Mounting challenges to global maritime security have spurred the formation of the multinational Defensive Maritime Alliance, which stresses the urgent need for enhanced collective cooperation. The alliance aims to protect freedom of navigation, secure international trade routes, and safeguard global energy supply lanes, particularly through critical chokepoints like the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.

The alliance's founding members announced its establishment in a joint statement, outlining its framework for maritime defense cooperation. This framework is designed to bolster maritime security, uphold freedom of navigation, and protect international trade and energy supply routes in accordance with international law, UN conventions, and recognized global norms. Saudi Arabia has been designated as the alliance's founding state, leader, and permanent headquarters, with plans to establish joint command and control centers within the Kingdom.

The founding members reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter, international law, and treaties, emphasizing that maritime security is a shared responsibility. They believe that robust cooperation and coordination are fundamental to addressing common and transnational maritime threats, thereby fostering global security, stability, and prosperity. Participating countries are currently completing domestic procedures to formally accede to the alliance's charter.

Crucially, the alliance asserts its purely defensive nature, clarifying that it is not directed against any specific state, alliance, or international organization. All activities will strictly comply with international law, respecting state sovereignty and the protection of freedom of navigation. The alliance has extended an invitation to countries that share its objectives and principles to join, believing that broader membership will strengthen collective maritime security in the vital Red Sea and Gulf of Aden regions.
