New Electric Scooter Launched Under $4,000 with 90 km/h Top Speed

American brand HMP has launched its new Lightning MK.II electric scooter, entering the market with a competitive price tag of $3,999, roughly NT$119,000. This model is designed for everyday urban use, catering to needs like commuting, shopping, and delivery services.

The Lightning MK.II boasts a top speed of 90 kilometers per hour and a maximum range of 100 kilometers. Powering the scooter is a removable 74V, 45Ah lithium battery, offering approximately 3.33kWh of capacity. A significant convenience is its support for indoor charging, making it ideal for apartment dwellers or those without dedicated charging facilities. Using the included 120V charger, a full charge takes about 4.5 hours.

This electric scooter has passed US DOT road regulations, allowing it to be legally ridden on public roads. In certain states, like California, riders can legally perform lane splitting, which can improve efficiency during peak traffic hours. The scooter is equipped with an electric motor in the rear swingarm, providing a continuous output of 4kW and a peak output of 7kW.

Practicality is a key selling point for the Lightning MK.II. It can accommodate two riders, has a maximum load capacity of 180 kilograms, and features pre-drilled mounting points for a rear cargo rack, allowing users to attach storage boxes or delivery equipment as needed. The single-sided swingarm design simplifies maintenance for the rear wheel and braking system. The scooter is delivered fully assembled, ready to ride straight out of the box.

Compared to HMP's previously released HMP Flash, which features standard CarPlay and a top speed of 120 km/h, the Lightning MK.II offers a more accessible price point and aligns with the usage needs of a broader audience. Media outlets suggest that the Lightning MK.II could be a more appealing option for many riders.
