New Electronic ID: Who Can Keep Using the Old Document and When It Must Be Renewed

Argentina has begun rolling out a new electronic DNI, but people with a valid existing document do not have to replace it immediately. Older versions will remain valid until they expire, provided the holder does not need one of the updates required by the authorities.

A new document must be requested when the previous DNI expires, when children reach the mandatory update ages of between five and eight, or when adolescents turn 14. Renewal is also required after theft, loss or damage, as well as after a change of address or a correction to personal information. The rules also cover corrections linked to recognition of gender identity.

The regular procedure costs 10,000 Argentine pesos for citizens. The same fee applies to updates for minors, the renewal at age 14, address changes, data corrections and replacement copies after loss, theft or damage. Faster services cost 26,000 pesos for an express DNI, 41,000 pesos for delivery within 24 hours and 57,000 pesos for the immediate service.

The first DNI for a newborn and the first correction linked to gender identity are free. Foreign nationals pay 20,000 pesos for the procedure.

Applicants can book an appointment at Renaper Documentation Centers through the Mi Argentina app, choosing the location, date and time. They can also go to the relevant provincial civil registry, depending on each jurisdiction’s procedures. Applicants over 14 must bring their previous DNI if they still have it. Minors must attend with a parent or legal guardian, who must prove their identity and provide the required documents. After the application, the applicant receives a receipt and tracking number to follow the process until delivery.
