New health professionals graduate from Havana University amid challenges

Despite significant challenges, including energy shortages, transportation difficulties, and a lack of essential supplies, the University of Medical Sciences of Havana has graduated 1,899 new health professionals. Rector Yoandra Muro Valle highlighted the graduates' commitment, stating their "white coats and youthful joy have said present" whenever the nation called.

The graduating class comprises doctors, dentists, nurses, and professionals in health technologies. Muro Valle acknowledged the students' perseverance in completing their studies amidst these obstacles, emphasizing that their "will and commitment allowed them to advance."

Dr. Alejandra de la Cruz Moreno, recognized as the top graduate in Medicine and overall, encapsulated the spirit of the profession. "Receiving this title is an honor that implies saving lives, alleviating pain, and transforming tears into hope," she said. Her words underscored a medical education that blends science, empathy, and responsibility, recognizing that years of study and dedication find their true meaning in service to others.

The ceremony also celebrated diversity, with over 580 international students from 73 countries graduating alongside their Cuban peers. These graduates return to their home nations equipped not only with medical expertise but also with shared human experiences gained during their time in Havana.

In their oath, the new professionals pledged to uphold patient dignity and autonomy, practice without discrimination, maintain confidentiality, and exercise their skills with scientific rigor, ethics, and critical thinking. They reaffirmed their readiness to serve wherever needed, embodying the internationalist spirit that has long characterized Cuban medical training.
