New Hyundai Avante Debuts with Premium Tech, Price Remains Key Question

Hyundai has unveiled "The All New Avante," aiming to elevate the compact sedan's status beyond its traditional image as a "national car" for first-time buyers and practical commuters. The company now describes the model as a "premium entry sedan," emphasizing its ability to deliver an experience that transcends its class.

At a "Tech Day" event, Hyundai showcased the eighth-generation Avante's advanced features, including a next-generation infotainment system called "Pleon Connect." This system offers large displays (14.6-inch or 12.9-inch) and integrates a generative AI voice assistant, "Gleo AI," along with an open app market. The company highlighted features trickling down from higher-end models, such as a hydraulic control rebound stopper (HRS2) for a smoother ride over bumps, similar to the system in the new Grandeur.

Further enhancing the driving experience, the new Avante includes a "memory reverse assist" function that remembers the vehicle's path for easier backing in tight spaces, and an upgraded Bang & Olufsen audio system. The car's dimensions have also been increased, with a 55mm longer body and 30mm wider body and wheelbase, improving rear-seat space and adding rear door cup holders, a rarity in the segment.

Safety has been significantly bolstered. For the first time in a Hyundai model, an emergency braking function is activated by pressing the P button on the electronic shift lever, preventing further acceleration and applying brakes if the driver inadvertently presses the accelerator. Other safety additions include pedal misoperation safety assist and navigation-based smart cruise control 2, which now extends to general roads for automatic speed reduction in specific zones.

The hybrid model receives performance enhancements, with a 16-horsepower increase in system output, leading to a 5.8% reduction in 0-100 km/h acceleration time and a 16.7% improvement in overtaking acceleration. Hyundai also aims for over a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency through aerodynamic refinements and reduced energy consumption. However, the ultimate success of the "premium" positioning hinges on the pricing, which will be revealed in August, as a significant price hike could challenge its value proposition against larger models like the Sonata.
