New Kidney Stone Treatment Center Opens in Sri Lanka

A new treatment center for kidney stones has been inaugurated in Mirigama, Sri Lanka, aiming to alleviate the significant waiting list for surgical procedures. Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa officially opened the facility on July 12.

Kidney stone disease is a prevalent health issue in Sri Lanka. Despite over 30 specialized urology units operating nationwide with expert urologists, the demand for treatment remains extremely high. Limitations in infrastructure, a shortage of operating theaters, and restricted access to modern endourological technology contribute to the lengthy waiting times.

An estimated 5,000 patients are currently on the waiting list for kidney stone removal surgeries across the country. The new Mirigama center is designed to provide services to patients nationwide and help reduce this backlog. Minister Jayathissa emphasized that the center represents a crucial and significant step forward for the nation's healthcare service.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Jayathissa stated that this achievement demonstrates the potential for success when multiple stakeholders collaborate on healthcare decisions. He stressed the importance of optimally utilizing existing healthcare resources, including buildings, equipment, and human capital, through effective management.
