New Municipal Commission Installed in Cité Soleil, Haiti

Haiti's Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Collectivities has officially installed a new Municipal Commission in Cité Soleil. The ceremony, attended by local officials and civil society representatives, marks a significant step in restoring governance to the violence-plagued commune.

The newly formed commission, led by President Daniel Saint-Hilaire and including Vice-Mayors Betty Montina and Jackenson Auguste, is tasked with administering Cité Soleil and contributing to its development until new elections can be held. The commission faces immense challenges, including ongoing violence, a deficit in infrastructure, and precarious living conditions.

Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé emphasized the resilience of Cité Soleil's inhabitants and urged the new officials to work diligently to support the population. He called for collaboration among local stakeholders to foster peace and stability, crucial for the return of internally displaced persons and the resumption of normal activities. "I am counting on you to work towards establishing security, stability, economic recovery, and the necessary conditions for holding elections," the minister stated.

Daniel Saint-Hilaire pledged a transparent, integrity-based, and responsive administration. He appealed for support from public and private institutions, as well as international partners. He also urged residents, both in Haiti and the diaspora, to mobilize to tackle the commune's security and infrastructure issues, particularly with the hurricane season beginning June 1.

Saint-Hilaire expressed deep concern over the persistent violence affecting several areas of Cité Soleil, which has resulted in loss of life, significant material damage, and displacement of families. The commission intends to work with the central government to promote dialogue, reopen schools, revive economic activities, and facilitate the return of displaced individuals.
