New Taipei candidate Lee Ssu-hsuan vows to tackle railway undergrounding

KMT New Taipei mayoral candidate Lee Ssu-hsuan unveiled a policy proposal to push for the undergrounding of the Shulin railway line, extending it to Yingge. He envisions this as part of a broader plan to develop Shulin into a "Giant Dome City," similar to Taichung's baseball stadium area, which would host sporting events, concerts, and large gatherings.

Lee acknowledged the project's long-standing difficulties, noting that previous New Taipei mayors had considered similar ideas but encountered major hurdles. He stated, "When Taipei undergrounded the Songshan and Nangang stations, it was even more difficult than this. If I am elected mayor, I will definitely talk thoroughly with the central government."

New Taipei City Councilor Hung Chia-chun highlighted the challenges, including the immense cost, estimated in the tens of billions of New Taiwan dollars, and the potential displacement of over a hundred households due to the need for temporary tracks during construction. She believes Lee's engineering background and clear policy vision position him to tackle these issues and connect the city's fragmented areas.
