New Taipei City launches 'Cow Power Escort Plan' to aid dairy farmers amid import challenges

New Taipei City is rolling out the "Cow Power Escort Plan" to bolster its local dairy industry against the anticipated challenges of imported dairy products. The initiative, spearheaded by the Animal Protection and Disease Prevention Office, aims to provide direct, expert support to dairy farmers. Professor Chuang Shih-te from National Chung Hsing University, a specialist in cattle diseases, will lead the effort, visiting farms in areas like Linkou and Tamsui. He will offer on-site consultations to address farmers' concerns and upgrade cattle health management. The program focuses on preventive care and optimizing nutrition and living conditions to enhance herd immunity and productivity. This move comes as Taiwan prepares for the zero-tariff import of New Zealand liquid milk by 2025, a development that could significantly impact the domestic dairy market. The plan emphasizes early detection of cattle health issues and timely adjustments to feeding strategies. It also incorporates modern farming techniques, such as "smart collars" for heat detection to improve conception rates in cows. Local farmers have welcomed the initiative, with one second-generation farmer noting the benefits of expert guidance and technological assistance in improving both animal health and milk quality, creating a win-win-win situation for cows, farmers, and consumers. The Animal Protection and Disease Prevention Office plans to continue these outreach programs to strengthen disease prevention networks and elevate farm management standards, ensuring the sustainable development of the local livestock industry and safeguarding food safety.
