New Taipei mayoral candidates clash over tourist tram proposal

New Taipei mayoral candidate Su Chiao-hui has reignited a proposal for a tourist tram in the Shiu-Jin-Jiu region, a plan her campaign says she first outlined in a "New Taipei Treasure Box" video in September 2024. However, the campaign for her rival, Li Chih-chiang, quickly pushed back, asserting that Li had been involved in promoting the idea a decade ago when he served as New Taipei deputy mayor.

Li's campaign spokesperson, Chen Hsin-yi, stated that Li had visited the Shiu-Jin-Jiu area four times during his tenure as deputy mayor to survey potential routes for a cable car and tram. Chen questioned who was following whom, suggesting Su's mention of the tram in a video two years after Li's involvement was an attempt to capitalize on his initiative. She criticized Su's claim of proposing the tram as akin to "adding fuel to the fire."

Responding to the controversy, Su stated that any initiative beneficial to New Taipei should be a collaborative effort. She emphasized her own efforts over the past decade, visiting various parts of New Taipei and gathering local opinions, which informed her "New Taipei Treasure Box" video series. Su highlighted that the tram revival is not just about transportation but also a cherished memory for locals and a symbol of regional identity. She concluded that working together towards a common goal for New Taipei's betterment is always a positive outcome.
