New testimony contradicts Aldo Mariños as his security aide is linked to Trujillo suspect

A new witness statement has brought a 23-year-old man closer to an investigation into the kidnapping of gold trader Jenns Lara and the killing of four people in Trujillo, despite regional candidate Aldo Carlos Mariños denying any employment relationship with him.

According to testimony broadcast by Epicentro TV, the young man said he had provided “his service” to Mariños for about a month and a half in exchange for a monthly payment of 300 soles. He reportedly drove an armed, hooded man in his vehicle near the area where the attack took place. The man had previously been described as a supposed police officer.

The new declarant, who is the first witness’s cousin and companion, also gave details about the vehicle’s route after it picked up the hooded passenger. His account is intended to help establish the route taken after Lara’s kidnapping.

At the end of his statement, the witness named a National Police subofficer whom he identified as the owner of a Nissan Versa. According to the testimony, the officer went to the area to follow the man who spoke with a Venezuelan accent. “He began calling his colleagues on his radio,” the witness reportedly said.

Epicentro TV also said it obtained photographs showing the young man accompanying Mariños at a campaign event. The images may support the claim that the two had a political or working relationship, but they do not by themselves prove that he worked as security or took part in the crimes. Mariños continues to deny that the witness belonged to his security team. Lara was kidnapped in Trujillo on Aug. 30, and the attack on Húsares de Junín Avenue left four people dead.
