New York DMV unveils commemorative license plate for 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence

New York drivers have a new way to commemorate a significant historical milestone: a special license plate celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) launched the commemorative plate, which will be available for passenger vehicles registered in the state throughout 2026.

The design, officially unveiled on June 16 at Peebles Island State Park near Albany, prominently features a map of the United States, several stars, and the inscription "United States of America 250." This initiative is part of a broader national effort, America 250, which aims to mark the country's quarter-millennial anniversary through various events, exhibitions, and educational activities across the nation.

According to the DMV, the new design offers residents an opportunity to honor the history and values that shaped the nation's founding. Drivers can also opt for personalized letter and number combinations, provided they adhere to the state agency's regulations. The cost of the commemorative plate is in addition to standard vehicle registration fees and varies depending on the chosen registration type.

Interested individuals can apply for the special plate through the DMV website, by phone, mail, or in person at any of the agency's offices. Online applications require a valid New York registration not expiring within 60 days, an updated address, and an accepted credit or debit card. Approved applications typically receive updated documentation within ten days, with physical delivery taking up to six weeks. A variant of the plate, featuring the Universal Access Symbol, is also available for eligible individuals, requiring direct application to the DMV's Personalized Plates Unit.
