New York mayor confirms agency aimed at strengthening workers’ voice

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a new agency designed to give workers a stronger voice in their workplaces. The Mayor’s Office of Worker Power, known as MOWP, will use City Hall’s resources and convening power to support employees.

Mamdani confirmed the office’s creation in an official press release on September 7. It will work with City Hall and municipal agencies on outreach, education, policy, research and strategic partnerships, focusing on workers who lack adequate conditions, fair wages or representation at work.

The office will be overseen by Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su. She said it would help the city anticipate exploitation “rather than simply react to it.” Tony Perlstein, described by the administration as a longtime labor and community organizer, will serve as its first executive director.

The administration presented the new office against a backdrop of pronounced economic inequality. It said the average chief executive at the 100 largest and lowest-paying U.S. corporations earned 614 times the average employee salary last year. The mayor’s office also said New Yorkers’ median real incomes had stagnated, citing data from Comptroller Mark Levine’s official portal.
