New York plumber earned $465,000 in a year, more than the mayor

An investigation has been launched into a New York City housing authority plumbing supervisor who earned more than $465,000 in a single year, a figure that surpasses the salary of the city's mayor. Jakub Markowski, a supervisor with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), reportedly billed an extraordinary amount of overtime, accumulating nearly 2,560 extra hours in the last fiscal year. This amount exceeds that of any other municipal employee.

Markowski's earnings also outstripped those of the city's police chief, fire chief, and heads of schools and jails. Simultaneously, records indicate that Markowski operated two private plumbing businesses, Super Plumbers Corp. NYC and Dynamic Blue Water Mechanical, which undertook more than 70 projects. The city is now scrutinizing the declared workload that allowed for such extensive overtime and private business operations.

The investigation comes at a time when the city faces challenges with nearly 300,000 residents living in over 240 public housing complexes. While high overtime hours are not uncommon for city employees, Markowski's average of approximately seven extra hours per day, if worked consistently, raised red flags for investigators. He had previously received an exemption in 2019 allowing him to hold both public and private employment.

Concerns about Markowski's work conditions were previously raised in June 2025 by the city's Plumbing Foundation, which filed a complaint with the Department of Buildings. The foundation expressed worries regarding the integrity, safety, and oversight of NYCHA building operations. A NYCHA spokesperson stated that the authority is cooperating with the investigation.
