New York Police Agencies Must End ICE Agreements by August 25 Under New Law

Twelve police agencies in New York must end their 287(g) agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by August 25, following a new state law championed by Governor Kathy Hochul. The legislation aims to redirect local law enforcement resources towards addressing community-specific crimes.

Governor Hochul emphasized that public safety is enhanced when local police concentrate on local issues. "Today, the state of New York told 12 law enforcement agencies that it is time to end their 287(g) agreements with ICE. Public safety is stronger when local police focus on local crime," she stated on social media.

The new law, known as the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, explicitly forbids local agencies from establishing, altering, extending, or renewing agreements under section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Consequently, all current 287(g) memorandums will become null and void after the August 25 deadline.

The 12 affected agencies were formally notified by the New York Attorney General's Office on July 24. They are required to respond to the Attorney General's office by August 14, detailing the status of their agreements and the steps taken to terminate them.
