New Zealand hit by 5.9 magnitude quake, followed by dozens of aftershocks

New Zealand's North Island experienced a "severe" 5.9-magnitude earthquake early on July 25, centered near Taumarunui. The tremor, occurring at a shallow depth of 9km, triggered a series of 73 aftershocks within five hours, according to seismic tracker GeoNet. Officials anticipate continued aftershocks, though they are expected to decrease in frequency.

Civil Defence Manawatu Whanganui reported road closures and urged caution for drivers. While there were no immediate reports of significant injuries or major structural damage, minor slips were noted, including on state highways. Power, water, and communication systems remained operational.
